Effie Gross c

I’m a freelance writer and English teacher. I have over 200 articles published in various magazines and newspapers. My education includes a BA in English and Education and an MA in English from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Currently I live in Maricopa, AZ. Travel to Israel, France, Ireland, Scotland, Estonia, and Russia has been a dream come true. I’m very blessed…beyond imagination.

My closest relationship is with the Lord. He rescued me from sin and reserves in heaven a new home for me. Without Him, I would be nothing! I’ve been a Christian since age 13.

I love helping others, teaching writing, and writing in many different genres. Learning is fascinating! I hope I never stop.

Another important issue for me is the American political landscape. I am involved in GOP activities locally and nationally. When I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, I mean it with all my heart. I also strongly defend the US Constitution.

Wherever American Veterans are located, I pray for them. I feel a loyal tie to the military, once being an Army wife and now the widow of a Veteran. Of course I have many relatives who have been engaged in war, from WWII and on.

I look forward to getting to know fellow bloggers. This personal blog is a new experience for me. It’s raw. It’s real. It’s really raw! I’m okay with it…I’m learning.

Typically, I post twice a month. To make sure you don’t miss any new posts, you can subscribe via RSS or e-mail. I will also accept a limited amount of advertising.

My Biography

I have been a writer from childhood, but I didn’t begin to get published until 1976. My first story was about my daughter and the cut she received on her face, my first experience with surrendering my children to the Lord. “The Special Scar” was published by Regular Baptist Press.

Since that time, I have been published in both secular and religious publications. I’ve attended numerous conferences on writing, and I’ve studied under W.P. Kinsella and the late Ray Bradbury. I will attend the American Christian Fiction Writers’ Conference in Dallas in the fall of 2012. There, I look forward to meeting blogging guru, Michael Hyatt and literary agent. Leslie Stobbe.

Afer writing a WWII novel, Foxtrots and Foxholes, I acquired my agent. He still has not placed my book, but we’re trying hard and hopeful. The current nonfiction book in search of a literary agent is Personal Letters: Gifts from the Heart.

I have worked for the late Evangelist Lester Roloff, Iowa Power’s electrical education program in the public schools, and the Internal Revenue Service. My background is varied…so much better to have a vast “bucket” to draw from.

For 43 years I was married to my childhood sweetheart, Roland Gross. He was called Home to meet his Lord in 2004. We have one daughter, two sons, three granddaughters, and four grandsons. Our youngest son was adopted at birth. He recently met his birth mother and remains in contact with her in Georgia. My first son lives in Iowa with his family, and the rest of my family live nearby outside of Phoenix, Arizona.

In my free time, I enjoy walking in the park, swimming with the grandchildren, attending political rallies/meetings, reading, teaching, and traveling…anywhere! I’ve worked with Christian Jew Foundation, taught Israeli dance, and held “Jewish Roots of Christianity” Bible studies. I am a member of Scottsdale Bible Church in Scottsdale , where I serve as co-leader for Word Creations.

  1. You are always there to help fellow writers, and have been for as long as I have known you, Effie. Knowing you and seeing your writing in progress, then in print has been such an instructive journey for me. Thank you for sharing your process with those who wish to improve in life, not just in writing.

  2. Deb,
You are the most intelligent and informed person I know, so I truly thank you for your kind words. You’ve given me so many brilliant ideas…some I’ll never live long enough to develop. I wish you the best on your gardening book. Your vegetables are amazing…blue ribbon quality!

I enjoyed reading a little more about a distant cousin. Tell me if you are a daughter of my great-aunt Thelma. I am the 63yr old daughter of Earl and Ellen Smith.

    • Sandra,
Yes, my mother is Thelma Bernadine Smith, daughter of Pearl and Albert Smith. You are my second cousin. Earl is my first cousin, son of my mother’s brother, John Smith. I hope you will contact my sister, Mynita Groves Anderson Rubel. She is on FB and is doing a lot of geneology for our family. I know she would have questions for you.
Thanks so much for writing. Where do you live? I remember your parents well, though they were older than me. God bless you. I hope you will “Follow” me as I blog. A lot of what I write is about family memories and connected to important issues. All the best,
~~Effie-Alean (named for Aunt Effie Smith Statler).

I wonder how it can be so long since we have talked!! Time really flies and I feel overwhelmed by it’s relentless march – playing ‘catch up’ never works for me. So I keep on as best I can, I am in love with your blog. Keep up the feel it has . . . so comfortable and casual, with so much heart and wisdom. i pray that you will always be there for the writers who get so much from your blog..

    You are so inspiring
    My best to you always

    • Carole,
Thank you for your kind remarks. Yes, it has been a while. I hope to see you on Friday at the writers’ meeting, July 13. Stay tuned to this blog. I have lots of things to write and share. As always, I love hearing from my friends.
